A brief description of the program(s), including positive outcomes during the previous three years (e.g. descriptions of new courses or course content resulting from the program):
The UAB Red Mountain Project is an annual course development program for faculty, funded by UAB Sustainability. Having just completed the second year of the program, UAB now has 26 courses with sustainability as a key component. In these two years, we have new sustainability-related courses in areas including English, Philosophy, Business, Biology, Engineering, Pediatric Medicine, Nursing, and Education.
A brief description of the incentives that faculty members who participate in the program(s) receive:
Faculty are required to participate in a 2-day workshop in late April or early May to dialogue with the host and various guest speakers regarding the breadth and depth of sustainability, how it relates to each discipline, and develop a better sense of place at UAB and in Birmingham. The faculty then have the summer to revise their syllabi (or develop new) and come back together for a half-day boat trip with our local Riverkeeper to see our drinking water intake, coal ash pond, and power plant. The completed syllabi are collected on this boat trip day and then the faculty are paid $1000 each to a departmental discretionary fund for that faculty member's research, supplies, travel, etc.
