A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation:

New Student Orientation (NSO) incorporates sustainability in several ways. The first opportunity students get at seeing the nature of sustainability at UAF is through the event dubbed "Wilderness Welcome". This is a multi night, leave-no-trace, adventure through the Alaskan wilderness, hosted by the New Student Orientation Office and Outdoor Adventures (a department that focuses on getting students outdoors through hands-on activities and trips such as raft, climbing (rock and ice), camping adventures and the like). All new students are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity.

During orientation students are given reusable bags and tips on sustainable and local living in Fairbanks. All food events outside of the dining halls use either compostable flatware and cutlery or washable alternatives.

During orientation all students are required to attend various sessions on student life, at least one of which discusses the sustainability program at UAF. This upcoming fall will host more sustainability related activities and a badge on the schedule marking each sustainability related event making it easier for students to choose a sustainability education track.
