AUGUSTANA CAMPUS
In May 2010, Augustana Campus installed 10 solar-thermal panels on the roof of Convocation Centre. The energy produced is used to relieve the water-heating requirements of the campus gym and cafeteria. Frequent updates of energy savings and carbon savings are available at the following URL:

A brief description of RECs or other similar renewable energy products purchased during the previous year:

In each of 2009 and 2010, the University of Alberta purchased 230,000 kWh of EcoLogo Certified Renewable Energy Certificates for renewable energy produced in Alberta. These credits were held to offset the energy needs of the LEED® Gold Triffo Hall building. For the purpose of this credit, only the April 2010-December 2010 portion was counted, to align with the 2010-2011 fiscal year.


A brief description of cogeneration technologies deployed:

The University District Energy System uses STG-1 cogeneration technology with a 13 MW steam turbine generator that was installed in 1994 - producing power while reducing pressure on the heating system. Because power generation is directly related to heating load, peak power production occurs during the winter months when it is needed most.

Additionally, a 26.4 MW condensing steam turbine generator was installed in 2000. This generator operates independently of the heating load.

In total, the University District Energy System can produce approximately 30 per cent of North Campus’ peak energy needs.

In the future, the university plans to incorporate renewable energy generation, including solar photovoltaic, solar thermal heating and potentially some geo-thermal into our $35-million, seven-year Next Generation Energy Management Program. The university is in the feasibility and design stage of two solar photovoltaic projects.

New innovative examples of solar-power use on North Campus include the recent purchase of 10 solar-powered electric grounds carts used by the Buildings and Grounds Services staff, the installation of solar-powered trash compactors in high waste volume locations and 45 solar-powered parking dispensers installed in a number of surface lots and short term parking lots on North and South Campus. More recently the university has installed two solar-powered pedestrian crossing signs in a high pedestrian traffic area on North Campus. The signs are equipped with sensors designed to recognize a moving vehicle up to 40 feet away and light up to warn the vehicle it is entering a high pedestrian traffic site.

NOTE: With the exception of the Augustana Campus solar thermal panels, the data presented is for the 2010-2011 fiscal year and were collected during regular utilities monitoring. Augustana Campus’ solar thermal panels are measured separately and the data is an approximation of energy produced for the 2011 calendar year.
