There have been steps taken to implement sustainability into the contracts for vendors on campus. Examples of incorporating sustainability into vendor contracts include:

UNIVERSITY DINING SERVICES
Aramark has incorporated environmental and sustainable practices clauses into its contracts and ensures that procured food, beverages, equipment and related goods are produced in environmentally- and socially-responsible ways. This includes utilizing hybrid and/or environmentally-friendly vehicles for transportation and delivery; offering sustainable, locally-grown and raised foods; incorporating waste management practices, including offering reusable dishware, offering discounts to customers using their own containers, pre- and post-consumer composting, recycling of cooking oils and grease, glass, aluminum, plastics, cardboards, and papers; conserving water and energy; and providing social marketing and education campaigns to increase awareness of the sustainability features implemented in the university’s dining services.

ECOPEST
The university has adopted an Integrated Pest/Weed Management (IPM) program administered through Ecopest. IPM uses an ecological approach to vegetation and pest management that strives to reduce reliance on pesticides as well as employ integrated preventative measures and alternative control technologies. In this program, the use of chemicals as a control method is always considered as the last resort. The IPM includes sustainability in the Pest Control Management contract by encouraging contractors to seek out alternatives that have a lesser impact on the environment. The contract also outlines that proper safety measures must be taken to protect the employees’ health, including ensuring that proper safety attire is worn, and that all incidents be recorded in an Accident Report.

LISTER HALL DISHWASHER CONTRACT
An energy audit was conducted to guide the procurement of a new dishwasher for the Lister Hall residences. The audit compared two similar dishwashers, identifying key differences such as energy efficiency and water usage per hour. As part of the comparison, a cost analysis revealed that a more efficient dishwasher would amount to $7,022 in savings over a yearly period. Savings would come from reduced water use, sewage costs, and reduced heat needs. As a result of the audit, the energy-efficient dishwasher was selected. The model chosen was rated by Energy Star, a third party certification that identifies and promotes energy-efficient products to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, the selected model saves 192,629 gallons of water per year, a 39 per cent water savings.
