A brief description of the institution's indoor air quality plan, policy, and/or practices:
All occupied spaces are monitored for indoor air quality. The University of Alberta uses Direct Digital Control systems to control the ventilation systems to maintain ventilation rates. Also, our mechanical design guidelines follow the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Standard 62 - Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality.
Occupants can provide feedback via the Quality Assurance call centre that is consistently monitored, and we use the services of a third-party testing agency to test air quality conditions in buildings as requested or required. Recently, we have increased our testing capacity by obtaining IAQ testing equipment for campus to allow more frequent and continuous monitoring.
New initiatives in IAQ include:
- Carbon dioxide monitoring in two buildings
- Nearly real-time measurements of fresh air intake flow on buildings where this is feasible
In addition, through the Care for Our Air program, signage is placed near air intakes on the sides of buildings to remind drivers not to idle, and that by idling they can have a negative impact on air quality and human health.
