Does the institution have a pre-consumer food waste composting program?:
Yes

A brief description of the pre-consumer food waste composting program:

In 2007, Buildings and Grounds Services (BGS) in collaboration with the Students’ Union (SU), Residence Services and Dining Services - ARAMARK, began a pre-consumer organics collection pilot project at two major campus dining facilities (Lister Market and SUB). The pilot eventually expanded to all commercial food outlets (35) on campus, with the exception of food services in HUB, which is a commercially leased space.

BGS provides all of the organics collection bins (indoor and outdoor) and the Waste Diversion/Recycling Coordinator provides one-on-one training on the program to all food service staff in the fall of each year. Sporadic monitoring throughout the year is also conducted to ensure food services are still participating in the program and are sorting organic waste correctly.

UAlberta is currently framing an expanded organics collection strategy for North Campus as part of our commitment to send 1,500 tonnes of organic solid waste to the new High Solids Anaerobic Digestion Facility located at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre.
