Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP)

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

Since 2001, the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP) has been an off-campus community-based collaborative cohort program. Partnering with four colleges (Northern Lakes College, University nuhelot'įne thaiyots'į nistameyimâkanak Blue Quills, Maskwacis Cultural College and Portage College), ATEP offers the final two years of the Elementary Education program.

Along with the established off-campus community based program, ATEP will be offering a pilot URBAN cohort program based on the main University of Alberta campus starting Fall 2017. This offering will begin from year one of the Secondary Education route with a major in Social Studies and an Interdisciplinary minor. The Urban Cohort based on the main U of A campus is exclusively for Aboriginal Students.

ATEP is designed to improve the educational success of Aboriginal children by increasing the number of Aboriginal teachers and non-Aboriginal teachers with an understanding of Aboriginal history, worldview, culture and perspectives in communities in Northern Alberta. While the off-campus community based program is intended for Aboriginal students, all students are encouraged to apply.
