Recyclemania

A brief description of the campaign(s):

UA participates in Recyclemania as a whole university but also holds a Recyclemania competition for the Residence Halls. During the ten week program, the university promotes recycling in the Student Union, Facilities Management, and Residence Life through greater advertising and awareness campaigns. Facilities are encouraged to use less materials and power during this period.


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign(s):

Recyclemania allowed UA as a whole to recycle 1,025,688 pounds of material in ten weeks.

Recyclemania in the Residenece Halls created positive impacts in the areas of electricity conservation and recycling. The 2010 numbers are summarized below.

Electricity saved amounted to 1516 MMBTUs, which resulted in
saving 275.702 tons of CO2 from being emitted in the air and 111.7 million gallons of water being used.

Recycling and waste reduction through Recyclemania resulted in total 21.8 tons of material being recycled, an increase of 6.9 tons over that of 2009.

Recycling Impact by material type:
Paper: 15.4 tons, resulting in saving 261 trees and 37.5 tons of CO2 from being emitted into the air, and approximately 107,000 gallons of water being used.

Plastic: 7.7 tons,resulting in saving 919.8 gallons of gasoline.

Aluminum:0.68 tons, resulting in saving 1598 gallons of gasoline.
