A brief description of how the assessment(s) were developed:

These questions were compiled from other respectable sustainability literacy assessments, and designed to be a sampling of important topics within social and environmental sustainability.

A brief description of how the assessment(s) were administered:

In the spring of 2016, students competed in a recycling competition through their classes, sororities, or fraternities, and received bonus points for taking the sustainability knowledge assessment. Due to the competition, participation rates were high. A followup evaluation was not conducted, but there are plans to establish a better system moving forward.

A brief summary of results from the assessment(s):

Students did not perform well with an average score of 38%. However, these students were mostly freshmen. The only question that the majority of participants answered correctly was, "What proportion of food produced in the world is estimated to be lost or thrown away before being consumed?" The likely reason that they performed so well on that question is that they also received bonus points for watching a video on food waste, which highlighted numbers like that. The good news is, they were actually learning.

Since female students are the majority and 54% of female students join sororities at the UA, a conservative estimate of 20% representative sample was assumed for the students taking the survey.
