A brief description of programs, policies, infrastructure investments, outreach efforts, and/or other factors that contribute to the diversion rate for construction and demolition waste:

The U of C Design Standards (June 2010) includes the Construction Waste Management (CWM) Plan which establishes performance standards for the management of construction and demolition waste related to new building construction, major renovations and minor renovations. Specifically the purpose of the CWM Plan is to:

• Confirm the procedures that will be used to achieve a minimum end-of-project landfill diversion rate of 75
percent, by weight, of total waste generated.
• Ensure that within the limits of construction schedule and contract sum, measures will be taken to reduce the
volume of waste generated on site by employing practices that achieve the most efficient use of resources
and materials, and the delivery of materials in returnable or recyclable packaging and pallets.
• Ensure the handling and disposal of all hazardous materials will comply with the Alberta Environmental
Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) Waste Control Regulation and all other regulatory requirements
applicable to the place of Work.

The CWM Plan for Minor Renovations is mandatory for any renovation where the project cost is less than $2,000,000 and exceeds $5000.

The CWM Plan for New Building Construction and Major Renovations is mandatory for all new building construction and major renovations where the project cost exceeds $2,000,000.
