The Board of Governors also has a standing committee on the Environment, Health, Safety & Sustainability subcommittee which advises the Board and makes recommendations on environment, health, safety and sustainability with respect to university policy and strategic direction.

In 2013 the Academic Committee for Sustainability was launched, undertaking discussions broadly within the academic community about how and where education for sustainability and sustainability literacy should be further developed.

The Operational Sustainability Steering Committee (OSSC) supports the University of Calgary’s commitment to leadership and excellence in sustainability by leading an organizational culture change that embeds sustainability in administrative and operational practices. The OSSC provides strategic oversight on the development and execution of the Implementation Plan for the Framework on Sustainability in Administration and Operations (AO Framework).

The primary purpose of the Office of Sustainability is to enhance the understanding of sustainability in the context of research, teaching and community service, to integrate sustainability broadly into campus operations and to build participation across the University in sustainability stewardship. The Office of Sustainability supports the University of Calgary in its efforts towards becoming a Canadian model for sustainability in higher education.

The Chief Sustainability Officer is responsible for promoting strategic leadership and organizational change strategies to assist the university in becoming a Canadian leader of sustainability in higher education

The Office of Sustainability provides institution-wide facilities and coordination in the context of sustainability in planning and administration, academics, engagements and operations.

The University of Calgary OS works collaboratively with academic and business units, as well as students, faculty and staff to support them in infusing sustainability into their goals. Some projects which the Office has been closely involved with include:

• Extensive campus community consultation process to inform development of new Institutional Sustainability Strategy (ISS)
• Stewardship of all reviews of the Board of Governors approval of a new 5-year ISS and supporting frameworks in education and research, engagement, and administration and operations
• Data capture for STARS and other reporting
• Sustainability leadership in committees including but not limited to Operational Sustainability Steering Committee, the Sustainability Stewardship Working Group and the Academic Committee for Institutional Sustainability
• Liaising with most senior directors to advance sustainability across the institution
