The program serves first-generation college students from low-income families and students from populations underrepresented in graduate education. Students who participate in the McNair Scholars Program receive benefits such as academic, career, and personal counseling, mentoring by faculty, preparation for the GRE, assistance in applying to graduate school, paid travel to professional and research conferences, training in research methodology, and a summer research internship with a research stipend of up to $2,800.

UC Davis offers two McNair Graduate Internal Fellowships to former McNair Scholars who have been accepted to a UC Davis Ph.D. program.
