A brief description of the assessment(s):

Faculty, staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students were surveyed separately within the past five years.

UC Irvine faculty, staff, and students at the campus and medical center were invited to participate in a climate survey in January/February 2013. The overall response rate was 30%. The survey included demographic questions as well specific questions related to the constituents’ experiences at UC Irvine. Results will be available later this year and will inform action plans for addressing climate and inclusion at UC Irvine. Information about the climate survey can be found at http://chancellor.uci.edu/campus_climate/ccs/index.php.

UC Irvine faculty and graduate students participated in a campus climate survey administered by the UCI Graduate Division in Fall 2010. Of the more than 7,500 eligible participants, 1,330 responded to the email solicitation by completing the survey. Respondents were generally representative of the campus as a whole in their mix of gender, discipline and status, and almost half the sample provided free response comments which were analyzed in addition to the quantitative data collected. The survey targeted participants' understandings of diversity, their attitudes toward existing and potential diversity-related policies, and their assessments of current campus climate. Survey results have been used to inform diversity programming through the "Diverse Educational Community and Doctoral Experience" (DECADE) initiative and have been disseminated to the individual academic units to provide for specific targeting of areas where diversity can be improved. More information on the DECADE program can be found at: http://www.grad.uci.edu/about-us/diversity/decade/index.html

The UCI ADVANCE Program conducted a Faculty Climate Survey in 2009 to assess “behaviors within [the] workplace or learning environment, ranging from subtle to cumulative to dramatic, that can influence whether an individual feels personally safe, listened to, valued, and treated fairly and with respect.” Results of the survey are posted at http://advance.uci.edu/Climate%20Survey%20Presentation.pdf and were disseminated broadly to campus leadership, and addressed in a follow-up presentation and workshop. As a result of the survey, the Council on Faculty Welfare, Diversity, and Academic Freedom and the Faculty Senate Cabinet officially endorsed “efforts to promote an equitable and productive academic environment for all faculty, believing that an inclusive faculty culture is essential to the mission of the university and to career success.” The mission of the UCI ADVANCE Program is to promote an inclusive culture for faculty and graduate student excellence.

A Diversity Roundtable has been established to broadly address the “intersectionality” of diversity efforts and issues across our campus community that impact faculty, staff and students. The Roundtable includes representatives from various campus offices, academic departments, and committees that address diversity issues at UCI.

UC Irvine undergraduates participated in the University of California Undergraduate Experience Survey (UCUES), a web-based census survey conducted simultaneously at all UC undergraduate campuses and at several national universities during Spring and early Summer 2012. The survey itself has been developed and refined over the years through inputs from researchers and administrators at all UC campuses and at the Office of the President, as well as through feedback from other national universities in the past two years. Together with student background characteristics added to survey results, campus UCUES results consist of over 700 pieces of information about the undergraduate experience at UCI.
UCUES is divided into five sections; the survey core, which is administered to all students; the academic experience and international engagement module (40% of respondents); the civic engagement module (10% of respondents); the student life and development module (10% of respondents); and the UCI campus values (40% of respondents). Campus climate themes addressed include overall satisfaction with UCI, the campus climate for diversity, general campus climate dimensions, and general student perceptions of the campus. Information about UCUES 2012 is available at http://www.assessment.uci.edu/UCUES/UCUES2012/documents/FinalUCUESClimateReport2012_V5.pdf
