Has the institution developed a definition of sustainability research?:
Yes

A copy of the institution's definition of sustainability research:

Sustainability research explicitly addresses one or more of the three pillars of sustainability; environment, economy and social equity. Research may address sustainability initiatives in basic research, education, or community service activities, and may also promote sustainability in planning, development, and operation of the campus environment and facilities.

Has the institution identified its sustainability research activities and initiatives?:
Yes

A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the inventory:

The Strategic Research Initiatives group (SRI), under the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, is responsible for the overall execution of UCLA’s strategic initiatives.

Research themes or clusters serve as a powerful organizational focus and encourage the convergence of intellectual interests and strengths of UCLA’s broad discipline base. At UCLA we have defined six broad multidisciplinary foci on campus where we are focusing our efforts.

The mission of the Strategic Research Initiatives group is to support the development, implementation and convergence of research projects within these themes:
* Nanosystems
* High Performance Computation and Visualization
* Arts and Entertainment
* Social Inequities and Solutions
* Climate Change, Clean Energy and Sustainability
* New Frontiers in Medicine

Each category has their own webpage that lists information relevant to that theme and research.

SRI administrators and staff, along with faculty on the Academic Subcommittee of the UCLA Sustainability Committee and faculty and staff from the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability collectively determined the definition of sustainability-related research and compiled the list of UCLA research centers and faculty involved in research.

Additionally, the UCLA Office of Intellectual Property & Industry Sponsored Research has put together an inventory of research at UCLA related to energy, clean technology, and sustainability, as well as technology and companies that have resulted from this research.

We recognize that this inventory of sustainability research, which brings together information compiled by several different campus entities, likely contains errors. We have made our best effort to include all sustainability-related research programs, but we are very likely missing some. We will continue to refine the list by adding (or removing) faculty and research centers as that information becomes known to us either through periodic reviews or feedback from faculty and researchers.
