A brief description of how the literacy assessment was developed and/or when it was adopted:

An initial list of over 200 questions was gathered with help from faculty and administrators across campus. These questions were used in pilot surveys which were taken in a number of classes on campus. Factor analysis was then used to determine the resulting 45-question assessment.

A brief description of how a representative sample was reached (if applicable) and how the assessment(s) were administered :

Assessments were administered through emails sent to all first-years and Seniors requesting participation in the survey during Spring 2015. The email provided a link which directed students to a qualtrics hosted survey. Recipients were not given any incentives to participate in the survey.

A brief summary of results from the literacy assessment(s), including a description of any measurable changes over time:

A total of 597 student responses were received with post-stratification techniques used to ensure representativeness of the whole study body. The overall conclusion from the responses was that students had a low level of sustainability literacy, with an average score of 70%. Seniors scored significantly higher than first-years, and Environmental Studies majors were much higher than the average. Students who had taken sustainability-related classes also scored higher.
