The Student Sustainability Advocates help run the Office of Sustainability's outreach events. For example, they staff informational tables at many events on campus, help provide programs in residence halls, lead discussions after film series events, teach sustainability-related skill workshops, and encourage fans to recycle at sporting events.

Student Sustainability Advocates are interviewed by Office of Sustainability staff and hired based on their qualifications and skills.
A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach:
Sustainability Advocates go through a training process which covers effective communication and various other skills necessary for the position, such as event planning and execution.
A brief description of the financial and/or administrative support the institution provides to the program (e.g. annual budget and/or faculty/staff coordination):
The Office of Sustainability has one full-time staff member, who oversee the Sustainability Advocates. All Advocates are paid hourly wages for their work.

This program offers students the opportunity to earn a non-credit environmental literacy certificate by attending lectures, workshops, films, small group discussions, and volunteer events. Many of these events are led by students, including the film discussions and workshops. Students also help oversee volunteer activities and small group discussions.

Students must have first earned the Environmental Literacy Certificate of Achievement or served as a Sustainability Advocate.
A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach (2nd program):
Students receive training in how to facilitate group discussions and create a welcoming, non-judgmental space in which productive discussions can occur.

The President's Advisory Council on Environment and Sustainability as well as the Office of Sustainability provide staff time to oversee the Environmental Literacy Certificate of Achievement program and all participating educators.
