Tier2-5: Move-In Waste Reduction

During student move in on the CU Boulder campus, large amounts of cardboard and stryofoam are generated in the residence halls. In order to prevent these materials from entering the landfill, CU Recycling has set up a system to capture the cardboard and styrofoam for recycling. Extra bins are set up at each residence hall recycling/trash area (at the building dock) for both cardboard and styrofoam. "Recycling Ambassadors" are stationed at these areas for the two largest waves of move in and are instructed to guide new students and parents to recycle their waste properly. Cardboard and Styrofoam are collected separate on a daily basis, consolidated into large dumpsters (Roll Offs) and then taken from campus to the Boulder County Recycling Center when full to be recycled. Move In recycling procedures are promoted throughout each residence hall through posters. The RAs/HDs are also instructed to pass on the recycling info to new students at the first floor meetings. Recycling of other materials, including cans/bottles and papers, are on going in the Residence Halls throughout the year, but are not the majority of materials during the Move In time period.

- Cardboard: 22.27 tons
- Styrofoam: 60 cubic yards
