Overall, as noted, the Vice Chancellor of Infrastructure and Safety office is tasked with coordinating sustainability-related activities. The newly created position of Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) resides in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Infrastructure and Safety (VCIS). That office oversees sustainability, safety, facilities management and real estate services. CU has several additional offices that also meet this need. The CU Environmental Center is the oldest and largest. However, Facilities Management, Housing and Dining Services, the Distribution Center and Purchasing all have offices/personnel designated for this function.

As noted in the job description for the Chief Sustainability Officer (provided), the CSO is responsible for building, driving and leading all sustainability efforts to support the University’s goal of becoming a national model for sustainability excellence. The CSO directs implementation of the University’s comprehensive strategic planning, implementation, and tracking of all sustainability goals.
Although the Chief Sustainability Officer has been on board only since June 2017, the history and legacy of sustainability efforts at the CU Boulder campus, through all of the divisions noted in response to item 12 have been hard at work in the arenas of waste minimization and recycling; pesticide-free grounds; locally sourced and sustainable food; procurement; energy; and the built environment.

CU has over 25 full-time staff working on sustainability. The Vice Chancellor, the Sustainability and Resiliency Program Manager and the Procurement and Supply Program Manager in the facilities management division join the Chief Sustainability Officer as FTE’s in the Infrastructure and Safety division. A full-time sustainability transportation program manager resides in the Parking and Transportation Services division, as does a sustainable and food safety manager and a sustainability coordinator in the Housing and Dining Services division. The Associate Director and the property services program manager in the Distribution Center also focus significantly on sustainability strategies. At the Environmental Center, the Director, the Associate Director and twelve additional full-time professional staff ranging from Energy and Climate Justice Program Manager to the Green Labs Program Manager to the Transportation Program Manager to the Bike Stations Manager etc. all work on sustainability. The Chief Sustainability Officer works closely with all of these individuals, as well as many other faculty and staff who have sustainability as an important aim in the work that they do.
