UConn Library offers long-term preservation and access to research data. UCL Research Data Archive gives researchers at all levels the opportunity to share data outside of original collaborations and beyond the life of a research project. The University of Connecticut Libraries’ Research Data Services Program offers data management education, training, and plan development support, and provides data preservation and access services to UConn researchers at all levels.
All funded research projects have to be available to the public in order to continue receiving funding, and the Digital Commons makes it possible to have open access to the research data.

When UConn originally provided its Open Access Policy, a fund called the Open Access Author Fund (2011 – 2014) was established to support faculty and/or staff in publishing their research in the open access repository. After 2014, however, the Open Access Author Fund expanded under the Open and Affordable Initiative (2015). Also run by the University of Connecticut Libraries’ Research Data Services, the Open and Affordable initiative incentivizes faculty and/or staff to not only create and publish their research in the open access repository, but also incorporate said research (and other open access material) in their syllabi. That being said, the Open and Affordable Initiative is even more comprehensive than the original Open Access Author Fund.

The Open Access Author Fund is co-sponsored by the University of Connecticut Libraries which encourages authors to make their publications open access. The UConn Homer Babbidge Library website has links to the open access research and additionally, library staff gives presentations to classes or groups on how to utilize the library resources, including open access databases. If a published article is eligible as a funded open access publication, it must be made available in the Digital Commons. The DigitalCommons@UConn is a digital repository of the intellectual output of the University of Connecticut's faculty, staff, and students. It can accommodate virtually any publication, presentation, or production in electronic format. DigitalCommons@UConn represents a way for the UConn community to organize, store and preserve its research in a single unified location. It is made available through Digital Commons software, licensed by the University of Connecticut Libraries and powered by the Berkeley Electronic Press.
