The Office of Environmental Sustainability housed in the Department of Facilities Management promotes initiatives and partnerships to advance campus operations towards greater sustainability. In the past three years, the office has developed a policy on LEED certification; installed demonstration solar arrays at the recreation center and one student housing unit; initiated participation in Recyclemania and for office ink and toner remanufacturing; and implemented an Energy Star equipment purchasing policy.

Activities and accomplishments for the new Hanley Sustainability Institute are noted in the Innovation section.

The Campus Committee on Environment was created in 2008 by President Dan Curran and is lead by the Environmental Sustainability Manager. This committee is comprised of students, staff and faculty, and has been charged with seeking out opportunities for collaboration in the service of sustainability at the University. The committee is charged with updating our community on sustainability efforts, and to serve as a clearinghouse for suggestions, initiatives, and proposals that would advance our sustainability goals.

A brief description of each sustainability office:

Facilities. The Office of Sustainability was established in 2008 with the hiring of UD's first Sustainability Manager. This office is located within Facilities Management, and reports to the Director of Construction Management. Facilities Management is currently engaged in efforts to compost and reuse organic material on campus, upgrade the technical systems of our buildings with more efficient equipment, design and construct LEED-certified buildings, identify the most sustainable companies and firms to contract with, and develop a plan for long-term sustainability and carbon neutrality.

Hanley Sustainability Institute. HSI promotes academic research, coursework, and programs to prepare students to meet the growing demand for sustainability skills in the workplace and in the community, and prepares the University to become a leader in sustainability education in the community, region, and nation.

A brief description of each sustainability officer position:

The position of Sustainability Manager is focused primarily on operational sustainability in the following areas: grounds, maintenance, construction and renovation, residential properties, technical systems, energy and waste. The Sustainability Manager is the chair of the campus Committee on Environment, and devotes a significant portion of his time to facilitating sustainability initiatives in academic areas and across the curriculum. The Director of Hanley Sustainability Institute focuses primarily on establishing relationships across campus to build programs in support of sustainability education. The Research Director of the Hanley Sustainability Institute coordinates and supports sustainability-related research opportunities across campus.
