Energy GPA

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

Launched in Fall 2017, the Energy GPA program provides students in University-owned student neighborhood houses with a grade of their monthly energy use. Monthly "report cards" include electricity and gas usage and a monthly tip for energy savings. The program is particularly innovative because grades are determined by comparing a house's usage against a statistical model unique to that building, based on past energy and weather data. Therefore, every residence is graded by a statistically valid method that allows the program managers to isolate energy savings from behavioral changes. A selected house or houses that show the best savings each month are awarded "Energy Champion" tshirts. With over 400 houses in our student neighborhood, the Energy GPA program will be a key way in which we engage students in lowering UD's overall carbon footprint. It has prompted events and outreach programs that educate students about energy conservation and sustainable living in their homes.

The Energy GPA program is supported through the work of Housing and Residence Life, the School of Engineering's Center for Energy Informatics, Facilities Management, and the Hanley Sustainability Institute, and sponsored by the Green Revolving Fund. Once energy savings are verified, the funds will be returned to the Green Revolving Fund, with the potential for the program to be renewed in 2018.
