"Each Complex Community Council in our residential areas have a Green Committee. The purpose of the Green Team is to encourage [residential] students to participate in hands-on sustainable practices while living on campus and to expose students to meaningful environmental sustainability education early in their college career so that they will continue living sustainably and responsibly throughout their adult lives. Students involved in this initiative will represent their complex in the education and development of a more environmentally sustainable complex."

Student educators volunteer to join the Committee and engage in Committee activities.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach:

Res Life holds sustainability training events for all Committee members, and also the student Resident Assistants (RAs), to inform them about current sustainability practices on campus and in the dorms, and ways that students can participate.


A brief description of the financial and/or administrative support the institution provides to the program (e.g. annual budget and/or faculty/staff coordination):

Training and event support are provided by Res Life to these Committees in each dorm. Res. Life maintains a small fund for Green Committee promotions, outreach or small events to fuel experimentation and innovation in peer-to-peer engagement.

"Each Complex Community Council (CCC) in our residential areas have a Green Chair position on the executive board. Individuals will have the opportunity to run for this position during CCC recruitment and, if selected, will chair the Green Committee. Green Chairs will also engage in monthly development related to environmental sustainability."

Student educators are elected by their peers during Complex Community Council elections.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach (2nd program):

Green Chairs are executive board members of their residential dorm council (CCC). They receive training and support from Res Life in leadership and sustainability issues.


A brief description of the financial and/or administrative support the institution provides to the program (e.g. annual budget and/or faculty/staff coordination) (2nd program):

Res. Life provides regular support for Green Chair members, and also monthly environmental sustainability training and development.

"Students involved with this initiative will focus on promoting campaigns designed to encourage proper deposits into the single-stream recycling system. If the group feels that basic education around using single-stream is necessary, efforts can focus there. In addition, creative efforts such as “Trash Chats,” or making a video regarding what happens to recycling at a sorting facility, are encouraged."

Students are educated about Delaware's single-stream state-wide trash stream. They are also advised on how to conduct outreach and education initiatives.

Res Life provides training and support to students so they can experiment and engage in outreach and education programming within their dorms.

Green Room Challenge is a set of guidelines to help students "green" their dorm rooms. It includes tips, background information and optional meetings to help students change habits or choose "green" products
