OP-20: Electronic Waste Recycling Program

The Athens-Clarke County Solid Waste Department provides collection and disposal services that meet or exceed state standards and are responsive to the health and sanitary needs of our community. The department accomplishes this while maintaining a competitive cost of services for our customers and the community as a whole.

Some of the innovative features include a geothermal heat pump, rain water cistern for irrigation and toilets, extensive use of natural light, porous pavement, and the use of recycled materials throughout the facility. A new vehicle wash system minimizes water use by recirculating and treating the wash water and bio-retention ponds minimize the impacts of any stormwater runoff. The Solid Waste Department has always tried to be a leader in green initiatives in our community and believes these new facilities continue to show that leadership.

With the continuous advances of technology, many electric devices rapidly become obsolete. The National Safety Council reports that over 30 million personal computers become obsolete annually. The Solid Waste Department now offers electronics recycling through a partnership with KP Surplus, a full-service computer and other technology retirement company.

Electronic Waste generated by the University is handled by Athens-Clarke County Soild Waste Services through a partnership with Creative Recycle Systems.

The company has led the industry by incorporating innovative methods into the processing of obsolete electronics. It has invested in cutting-edge equipment to shred, sort and separate equipment into its original components which are further refined and recycled into new products. Our goal is zero waste. Of the thousands of tons of equipment that enter our facilities, less than 1% actually enters the waste stream. And of that 1%, all of it is 100% contaminant free. [need reference]
