Committee on Sustainability:
Mission: To support the Office of Sustainability in its primary functions to coordinate, communicate and advance sustainability initiatives at the University of Georgia. To develop plans and implementation strategies to coordinate and enhance ongoing campus sustainability efforts; communicate those efforts to students, faculty, staff, alumni and the general public; and continually advance sustainability through existing and new initiatives in teaching, research, public service and outreach, student activities, and internal campus operations. Individuals on the committee will serve as the sustainability representative of their department or organization.

A brief description of the sustainability office:

The Office of Sustainability was initiated in 2010 as part of a strategic directive to enhance conservation of resources and long-term sustainability at the University of Georgia. Primary responsibilities of the Office include coordination, communication and advancement of sustainability initiatives at the UGA.

Mission: To conserve – “keep safe and well” – natural, physical and financial resources. To provide leadership and coordination of sustainability initiatives on campus. To ensure campus-wide implementation of the University’s commitment to sustainability as outlined in the 2020 Strategic Plan.

Vision: To pursue a model for healthy living on campus and beyond. To develop a sustainable university that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. To create opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to enhance the quality of life in their communities, both physical and scholarly. To function as a living laboratory where sustainability is researched, taught, practiced, and constantly refined.

The Office of Sustainability employs four full-time staff members: Kevin Kirsche, Director; Tyra Byers, Sustainability Coordinator; Jennifer Dunlop, Sustainability Coordinator; and Andrew Lentini, Sustainability Coordinator. As Director of the Office of Sustainability, Kevin Kirsche coordinates the overall operations within the Office and acts as a liaison between the Office and other departments and offices around campus.
