A brief description of the graduate degree program (1st program):

The University of Houston environmental engineering program offers the degrees of Master of Science, with thesis and non-thesis options, and the Doctor of Philosophy. The emphasis of study and research is placed on municipal and industrial water and wastewater treatment, water reuse, hazardous-waste management, and groundwater restoration. Elective courses are offered in air pollution modeling, measurement and control, engineering management, business and public policy, environmental law, water resources engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, biochemistry, and geosciences.

The UH College of Technology offers a Master of Science in foresight, a graduate certificate in foresight, and a professional certificate in foresight. The Foresight Program at UH addresses organizational concerns by focusing on forecasting and planning discontinuous and transformational change, by analyzing rapid alterations in external environments, and by using systems thinking to increase the chances of achieving preferred futures.

Doctor of Philosophy in atmospheric sciences

A brief description of the graduate degree program (3rd program):

The College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics offers a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in atmospheric sciences. Students seeking M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in atmospheric sciences are required to take at least one course from the three atmospheric sciences graduate core categories: 1) atmospheric dynamics and physics, 2) atmospheric chemistry, and 3) atmospheric measurement and modeling. Students of both programs have access to many resources that involve sustainability such as interdisciplinary research centers and highly active field sites for applied study.

A brief description of the graduate minor, concentration or certificate (1st program):

The UH Law Center’s Master of Laws program in energy, environment, and natural resources law trains future lawyers to handle the complex legal and policy issues that surround three areas: energy production, transportation, and use; pollution prevention and biodiversity protection; and natural resources exploitation and conservation. Students can focus on one of the three areas or pursue broader studies of the interrelationship between energy development and policies to protect the environment.

The UH College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics offers a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in biology with a track in ecology and evolution. Graduate students in the ecology and evolution track have a diverse set of research interests ranging from bioinformatics and molecular evolution to behavioral and community ecology; most which include sustainability themes. Graduate students participate in cross-division and cross-departmental initiatives focusing on behavior and networks, including work with neighboring universities and the UH Coastal Center.

The graduate certificate program in upstream energy safety is a multi-disciplinary program focused on health, safety, and environment (HSE) in the upstream sector. The goals of the graduate certificate program in upstream energy safety are to help companies build the right HSE culture and attitudes, to broaden petroleum industry training, and to deepen understanding of industry HSE standards and government regulations by providing a vital foundation for career enhancement to energy industry professionals.
