The survey was developed in coordination with the School of Urban and Regional planning to assess undergraduate sustainability education at the University of Iowa, identify strengths and weaknesses, and provide a benchmark for tracking progress. While previous surveys had been administered, this iteration was first adopted 2016.
A brief description of how a representative sample was reached (if applicable) and how the assessment(s) were administered :
A simple random sample of 10% of undergraduate students was conducted. The survey was web-based and administered through e-mail, with gift certificate incentives for completion.
The Fall of 2016 had a 16% response rate. The survey was again administered in the Fall of 2017 (at the time of filing, the results were still being compiled).
A brief summary of results from the literacy assessment(s), including a description of any measurable changes over time:
Several general conclusions were reached:
-Students have limited enviromental sustainability knowledge
-High level of interest in Sustainability; need to promote the Sustainability Certificate
-Volunteering is a pathway to sustainable attitudes
-Small-town, conservative, female students are the least knowledgeable about sustainability and could be a target of future outreach
-Independent self-study should be encouraged as a means to improve sustainability knowledge; notable the SDLMI and a shift from lecture to outside-the-classroom learning.
