In Spring 2010, students living in University student housing were asked to sign a pledge to reduce their usage of water, electricity, and gas for two months in March and April. The challenge was open to any of the communities in the Dept. of Student Housing. Four of the communities, representing approximately 120 students signed up to participate. Representatives from Student Housing meet with the local governments of these halls to give them tips on how to reduce usage. Student Housing kept track of the usage and compared it with usage for the same two months in the previous year. Student Housing then used savings to implement ideas from the students to make further savings, which included: upgrade light fixtures and bulbs, install devices on shower-heads to decrease water-flow, and install motion sensors on light switches.

The students who participated were able to drastically alter their utility usage.
During the two months, the students reduced the utility usage by:
97,810 gallons of water
8,940 kilowatts of electricity
394,263,770 btus
