EN-13: Community Stakeholder Engagement

In the current draft of the University Strategic Plan (to be adopted by UK Board of Trustees June 2015) there will be a framework that formalizes community stakeholder engagement relative to organizational structure, support for student faculty and staff, curricular and co-curricular initiatives and operations.

This is included in Strategic Initiative 1:Renew our institutional commitment to promote the public good through the sustainable application of our expertise and resources to meet challenges and disparities associated in social, economic, environmental, educational, and health issues.

Action Step 5: "Foster and sustain a comprehensive and multi-dimensional partnership among campus and community stakeholders in the communities in which we are located, based on meaningful and sustainable dialogue. (current draft language)"

Action Steps 3 and 4 of Strategic Initiative 1, outline our approach to identifying and engaging stakeholders.

Action Step 3: In partnership with local, state and global communities, identify emerging issues, challenges and community aspirations that are viewed as most important by our community partners and focus UK’s resources on meeting these challenges.

Action Step 4: Build a mutually-beneficial network of community, corporate, and University partners that facilitates a broad range of inclusive and accessible enrichment opportunities, to advance key economic development initiatives of our Commonwealth.

Also, Strategic Initiative 2 focuses on deepening student learning through community engagement.

Action Step 1: Provide every student the opportunity to participate in a community engagement experience through academic coursework, clinical outreach services, service-learning, internships, education abroad, research, co- curricular experiences, or cooperative extension services.

Action Step 2: Develop faculty and staff expertise to deliver quality community engagement and outreach, service-learning courses and co- curricular experiences that will utilize current best practices and be culturally competent, measurable and sustainable.

The Assistant Vice President for Community Engagement maintains a active list of community stakeholders, some of whom were party to the development of the language and concepts for the current strategic plan, that will be used to address the Strategic Initiatives and Action Steps from the draft Strategic Plan.

The Center for Community Outreach in the Office of Student Involvement also maintains a database (http://www.ukcco.org/) of community partners and potential partnerships used to connect students through curricular and co-curricular activities to (Lisa has language)

Development of the UK Master Plan (2013) involved dozens of community stakeholder meetings and was shaped by the feedback from those meetings.

We are also in the midst of a massive campus transformation with more than 1.7 billion in capital construction and this work has been closely coordinated with the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government, Council and Neighborhood Associations.
