The University of Manitoba students, staff and faculty have opportunities to be involved in governance of the University. Students also have opportunities to be involved in governance on Faculty and School Councils.
Is there at least one student representative on the institution’s governing body who was elected by peers or appointed by a representative student body or organization?:
A brief description of student representation on the governing body, including how the representatives are selected:
The primary governance body of the University is the Board of Governors which consists of 12 members appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor in Council, three members elected by graduates of the University, three members elected by the Senate of the University and three members appointed by the University of Manitoba Students’ Union. The Board, as the Corporate Governing Body of the University is responsible for overseeing the administrative and business affairs of the university, including approving the annual budget and appointing and monitoring performance of the President and Vice-Chancellor.
Student participation: According to The University of Manitoba Act, in section 8(c.1) “three students of the university appointed by The University of Manitoba Students' Union”. The University of Manitoba’s Board of Governance allows three representatives appointed by the UMSU (University of Manitoba Student Union). UMSU provides one seat to the UMGSA (University of Manitoba Graduate Student Association). The student representatives on the University of Manitoba’s Board of Governors are full members of the Board and participate at all levels of governance and decision-making conducted by the board. These include establishing/maintaining/abolishing/changing colleges, establish/abolish/change lectureships, bursaries, fellowships and prizes, buy/receive/sell/mortgage/lease real and personal property, university construction plans, appoint the president/vice-president/deans/directors etc., set all fees and charges set to the University, ensure investments of University money, make regulations on parking, exercise disciplinary jurisdiction over students and provide contacts with other organizations.

The staff representatives on the University of Manitoba’s Board of Governors are full members of the Board and participate at all levels of governance and decision-making conducted by the board. These include establishing/maintaining/abolishing/changing colleges, establish/abolish/change lectureships, bursaries, fellowships and prizes, buy/receive/sell/mortgage/lease real and personal property, university construction plans, appoint the president/vice-president/deans/directors etc., set all fees and charges set to the University, ensure investments of University money, make regulations on parking, exercise disciplinary jurisdiction over students and provide contacts with other organizations.
