25 Planet Blue Student Ambassadors are selected to participate based on an application process and the requirement of each PBSA living in the dorms for the year that they are participating.

A two-part seminar is required for all Planet Blue Student Ambassadors, where they will gain a framework for fostering positive sustainable behavior change in a context that provides support from other student ambassadors as well as staff ambassadors.

The Graham Environmental Sustainability Institute oversees the Planet Blue Student Ambassador Program and employs one part-time coordinator who is the key resource person for the coalition of departments facilitating the program. Funding is provided by the Office of the Provost as part of President Coleman's Sustainability Commitment.

The board members of the Student Sustainability Initiative are selected by an application process. There are typically 6 board members at any time. Anyone can become a member of the general SSI.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (2nd program):

The University of Michigan Student Sustainability Initiative (SSI) is a collaborative group of leaders in campus organizations, environmental groups, and student governments interested in promoting environmental sustainability and change at the University of Michigan. They are focused on bridging the gap between student groups and the university administration by serving as a focal point for environmental action on campus. To that end, they work closely with SSI member groups as well as collaborate with & receive training and mentoring from the Graham Environmental Sustainability Institute and the Office of Campus Sustainability.


A brief description of the staff and/or other financial support the institution provides to the program (2nd program):

The Graham Environmental Sustainability Institute provides funding for and oversees the Student Sustainability Initiative. This initiative employs five part-time board members who, along with a large collaborative group of students and multiple student organizations, help connect students and promote environmental sustainability.
