A brief description of steps taken to reduce hazardous, special (e.g. coal ash), universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:
U-M has managed a pollution prevention (P2) program since 1997. Included in the P2 program is a chemical redistribution program where unused chemicals may be donated for use by other departments, as well as informational guides to assist with waste minimization, micro-techniques, chemical substitution processes. U-M also has on site distillation of acetone, xylene, and formalin waste allowing for reuse of these chemicals.

UM Occupational Safety & Environmental Health Department Hazardous Materials Management (HMM) is responsible for the collection and proper disposal of chemical, radioactive, and biological waste generated throughout U-M.
