Yes

Name of the campaign:
Zero Waste Events

A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged:

The Zero Waste Program provides FREE technical and financial assistance and resources to staff departments and student groups to reduce compostable waste being landfilled. The program focuses on reducing packaging, avoiding single-serve items, and providing compostable ware and compost service to support zero waste events. To increase the program reach and impact, compost collection carts are being added to loading docks and serviced regularly in buildings with food service or that frequently host events and have departments committed to composting.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:

The overall weight of compost collected has increased significantly, from 168 tons in FY 14, to over 633 tons in FY 17. Growing interest in and commitment to zero waste events has warranted establishing permanent compost service to over 40 buildings. FY17 had over 100 events reaching more than 20,000 staff and students. To date, FY18 there have been nearly 200 individual events and more than 40,000 participants.

Students are surveyed before arrival on campus for their use of single use bottled water and their use of a reusable water bottle. They are surveyed again at the end of the school year. The positive impacts of the campaign have been consistent with marked improvement within the span of the school year. For example, in Fiscal Year 2017, 84% of students reporting using single use bottles vs. 50% at the end of the year. In Fiscal Year 2016, 87% used single use bottles at the beginning of the year vs. 53% at the end of the school year.
