We surveyed the public domain for questions used by other schools and selected questions we believed would work well for our institution. We also created some new questions that were more directly related to our location in Minnesota.

We send the sustainability literacy assessment to all incoming freshman and graduating seniors. In this way, we survey the entire student body at intervals that allow for comparison.

We receive both quantitative and qualitative information from the sustainability literacy assessment. In general, we have learned that students are increasing their sustainability literacy via classes, engagement with fellow students, internships, and specific mentors.

The SLA is a questionnaire containing 20 multiple choice and two short answer questions that are designed to determine the effectiveness of courses and co-curricular programming in regards to educating students about sustainability.
