A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory (including the types of faculty and staff included as researchers):

The researchers* engaged in sustainability were identified according to their affiliation to the EDDEC Institute (Institut de l'Environnement du Développement Durable et de l'Économie Circulaire), a research group that explicitly address sustainability. Since the mission of the institute is “to support and promote training, research, action and influence of the Université de Montréal , HEC Montréal and École Polytechnique Montréal, on the environment, sustainable development and circular economy [...]”, it was assumed that the member fulfilled the criteria of STARS for their research activity to be labeled as “sustainability research” (EDDEC, 2016; AASHE, 2016).

Faculty members at large were also consulted to confirm the attributes associated with their research (sustainability research or not). Requests by faculty members to add sustainability-related attributes needed to be explained and justified on methodological grounds.

The departments where sustainability research is conducted were identified according to the affiliation of the researchers.

*By researcher, we mean any person who can request and hold research funds, namely a person eligible to manage a research fund according to Université de Montréal's criteria.
