85,000 student community service hours is our best estimate for 2009, though it may be higher.

Marianne Fortescue believes that most students participate in some form of service though they may not consider it to be service. One of the largest challenges when looking for numbers is overlap. Many of our students are involved in several service programs. A student with Rotaract (a collegiate chapter of the Rotary Club) may also participate in and ABC trip and UNH Relay for Life.

By and large, the figures don’t reflect student participation in the academic realm (service-learning). Service-Learning differs from internships in that service-learning connects directly to the course through in class reflection and shared learning. The time commitment varies. Some courses require up to a 20-hour out-of-class placement, others participate in a short, one-time activity. The Thompson School offers a degree or certificate in Community Leadership. All students must be involved in community work throughout the 2-year program.

*13,863.83 = full-time equivalent degree-candidates. http://www.unh.edu/ir/newstud1a.html
