A brief description of the program:
UNC-Chapel Hill conducts a campus-wide yard sale at the end of the spring semester called Tar Heel Treasure. Tar Heel Treasure is an inter-departmental effort, spearheaded by the Department of Housing and Residential Education, in partnership with the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling, the Carolina Union, UNC Athletics, UNC Facilities Services, the Department of Public Safety, the Executive Branch of Student Government, the Residence Hall Association, and the Campus Y. In 2010, revenue was donated to UNC’s Build a Block program with Habitat for Humanity of Orange County to build 10 homes for UNC employees and their families.
The Move-out drive for Tar Heel Treasure in 2010 collected approx. 13 tons of furniture, appliances, carpet, clothing, office supplies, food (donated to the Interfaith Council), and books (donated to Better World Books). Metal is recovered from futons and other furniture, and 1-2 tons were collected last year.
