A brief description of the source of non-potable water and how it is used:
UNC uses non-potable water from multiple sources including: reclaimed water from the local water and sewer authority, harvested rainwater stored in cisterns, and collected condensate.
The Energy Services Chilled Water unity is the largest user of non-potable water at UNC. Non-potable water (primarily reclaimed water) is used for cooling tower make-up water at the five chilled water plants on campus.
The FedEx Global Education Center uses non-potable water (harvested rainwater)for toilet flushing. Three additional buildings -- NC Botanical Gardens, Genome Sciences, and Biomedical Research Imaging Center -- have non-potable water toilet and urinal flushing systems in various stages of construction.
Several landscape irrigation sites use non-potable water (currently harvested rainwater). These include the quad near Hanes Hall and Rams Head Plaza.
Several athletic fields -- the football practice fields, Fetzer Field, and Boshamer Stadium (baseball) -- are irrigated with non-potable water (harvested rainwater). In the next year, these will be backed up with reclaimed water. Additional non-potable water systems are nearing construction completion at Anderson Stadium and Williams Field (softball) and Kenan Stadium (football).
