A brief description of the programs sponsored by the institution to support under-represented groups within the student body:

Diversity and Multicultural Affairs actively recruits students from under-served communities, including African American, American Indian, Asian American, Latina/o, low-income, rural, and first-generation students. Project Uplift, H.S. Honor Days, UNC Scholar Days, Native American Recruitment Day, Native American Visitation (accepted students), Latina/o Student Recruitment Weekend, Dia de Bienvenida (accepted students), Tar Heel Target (minority student volunteers visit their high schools), Carolina United, NC Renaissance (rural students), and Pre-Orientation are all designed to assist under-represented groups. The Minority Student Recruitment Committee is a partnership between Diversity and Multicultural Affairs and student groups, including the Black Student Movement, the Carolina Indian Circle, NC Renaissance, Carolina Hispanic Association, and Student Government. The Center for Student Success and Academic Counseling sponsors programs to promote academic excellence for minority students and to improve the campus climate for diversity. These programs include the Learning Center, Academic Success for Students with LD/ADHD, the Writing Center, Academic Support for Student Athletes, and Summer Bridge. Undergraduate retention programs are offered by the Office of Undergraduate Education in the College of Arts and Sciences. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Office in the Division of Student Affairs provides support for students of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions.

The Diversity Incentive Fund, administered by UNC Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, is intended to encourage and support faculty, staff, and students in the creation of new educational programs and campus-based initiatives that promote cross-cultural learning and knowledge. Requests may be made for up to $2,500.

The Women and Science Program, administered by the Women's Studies Department, works with science departments at UNC to attract and retain more women and minority students and faculty in the sciences and mathematics. The main efforts are to promote systemic change in the ways that science, and science education, are regarded and carried out at the University. Women’s Studies is working to create a neutral space for students and faculty to voice their understanding of healthy working relationships and to provide a productive environment for dialog without fear of repercussions. The program exists to integrate the ideas, strengths, and approaches of women into research, teaching, and service, and to promote a supportive environment for women to study and work.
