A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability, including the issues, bills, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:
~~The University of North Carolina advocated for Session Law 2007 – 546 (Senate Bill 668): An act to promote the conservation of energy and water use in state, university, and community college buildings. It requires new and renovated state buildings to be constructed to surpass ASHRAE energy standards by 30%, meet high performance building standards, and reduce indoor water consumption by 20%. It also requires the state to conduct energy audits every 5 years, and requires life-cycle cost analysis for state building projects.

~~UNC's Board of Governors included energy efficiency on its legislative agenda for 2009-2011. The proposal, which passed, allows campuses to retain energy savings achieved through performance contracting and other means and increases the state cap for energy performance contracts to $500 million.
