A brief description of the practice:

The Public Service Scholars program, started in 2003, recognizes students who graduate with at least 300 hours of service, complete one service-learning course, and four skills trainings. In 2010, UNC graduated 190 Public Service Scholars with eight students reporting more than 1,000 hours each. As a group, they reported more than 89,657 hours of service, an average of 470 hours per graduate. The Public Service Scholar designation is recorded on student transcripts.
