The University has been a strong advocate to local government for expansion of light rail and the application of Transit Oriented Development (TOD) Policies. A major expansion of light rail is under construction in 2015, with the university contributing land for track a station on campus, and a station adjacent to campus. In 2015, the university advocated that the Charlotte City Council adopt the University City Area Plan adopting TOD approaches to increase urban density and decrease sprawl. (University City is business development district that includes the main campus, a research park, and adjacent neighborhoods)
