A brief description of the sustainable food and beverage purchasing program:

Sodexo, who currently manages UNCP's dining services, at the corporate level is committed to serving local and sustainably grown products that are healthy and from fairly and responsibly certified sources, but are just starting to improve the process on this campus. Sodexo states they are committed to working in partnership with our campus's NC 10% Campaign and RFC students and the Sustainability Office to increase local (North Carolina or 150 mile radius) and sustainable purchasing every year. Sodexo's distribution network strives to support the use of sustainable and locally grown products at Pembroke whenever possible and in season, but real progress is still pending, to date as shown in our 0.25% local and sustainable food percentage above.

A brief description of the methodology used to track/inventory sustainable food and beverage purchases:

Calculations were made by manually combing through last year's purchases from distributors (Sysco, FreshPoint and regional distributors) and calculating totals based on STARS guidelines.

Foods from large conglomerates such as Pepsi were excluded from the sustainable purchasing percentage (even though this information appears in the product inventory).
