A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
In Fall 2010, UNT’s Pohl Recreation Center installed technology on several elliptical machines to capture the kinetic energy produced during exercise and convert it into electricity, effectively creating one of the largest human power plants in the country. The ReRev technology can produce 50 watts of electricity from a single thirty-minute workout, enough energy to power a laptop computer for an hour. Although minimal in comparison to the electricity needed to power the Pohl Recreation Center, the electricity produced with the ReRev system is fed directly to the building’s power supply, slightly reducing aggregate electricity needs.
