A brief description of how the student educators are selected (1st program):

The Residence Hall Association (RHA) is a group of elected representatives from each of the residence halls. Members serving on the RHA are allowed to serve on either the social justice and diversity, community service and sustainability, and social programming.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (1st program):

Members of the committee meet on a weekly basis throughout the school year. During the session, they learn about topics in sustainability and social justice that they can address within the residence hall system and determine how to implement activities associated with these topics.


A brief description of the staff and/or other financial support the institution provides to the program (1st program):

A $10 Student Activity Fee is used to fund this program. From the fee, $7 goes to each of the halls for activities, while $3 goes to the Residence Hall Association.

Interested students attend weekly membership meetings held in the Student Involvement Activity Center.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (2nd program):

Students are trained on energy efficiency, weatherization, and energy audits by Building Performance Institute (BPI) certified Building Analyst. Each student shadowed the BPI Analysts on multiple home weatherizations off campus. Their training also focused on multi-resident homes, apartments and dormitories. Students designed the program to mirror the work of Green Iowa AmeriCorps, a residential home weatherization organization in eastern Iowa. The group recognized the need in college housing for improved efficiency in terms of conservation and financial savings.

The university has provided institutional and student programming funds to assist with programming. Additionally staff from the Center for Energy and Environmental Education and the Sustainability Office serve in an advisory capacity for the program.
