A brief description of the institution’s policies and programs to minimize the cost of attendance for low-income students?:

The University of Ottawa is one of the top institutions in Canada for its commitment to provide bursaries to students with a variety of needs and talents. Bursaries are accessible to all students that have enrolled in the current year/upcoming year of study, are eligible for governmental financial aid and claimed that aid the previous year, contribute financially to their studies, maintain satisfactory academic standings, and have completed the necessary forms by the deadlines.
Some of the programs the University has in place to help reduce the financial burden of post-secondary education for low-income students are:

The University of Ottawa financial aid bursaries (University budget bursaries, tuition fees exemption);
Financial aid bursaries from private companies and various organizations (OSOTF, AUCC, other companies), the Queen Elizabeth II Aiming for the Top Scholarship, The University’s Work-Study Program;
The Work-Study Program offered by Ontario’s Ministry of Education;
Millennium Scholarships (Ontario and other provinces);
Excellence Scholarships from the University (admission and renewal, other excellence scholarships, tuition fees exemption scholarships);
Assistantships.


A brief description of the institution’s programs to equip the institution's faculty and staff to better serve students from low-income backgrounds:

The Student Academic Success Service (SASS) has resources available to aid the UOttawa faculty and staff in better meeting the needs of students of various backgrounds. SASS works with professors to help them identify and better aid students which might be in need of help to deal with stress, anxiety, depression or other.


A brief description of the institution’s programs to prepare students from low-income backgrounds for higher education:

The Universities Student Academic Success Service (SASS), provides a number of services and programs designed to help students from all walks of life better prepare for higher education. They provide services such as counselling and coaching services, and peer mentoring, as well as an academic writing help centre (AWHC), Aboriginal Resource Centre, and Access Services. Through the variety of programs available to students, SASS is able to meet the needs and support students from low-income backgrounds in their endeavours in higher education.

The University’s Work-Study Program;
The Work-Study Program offered by Ontario’s Ministry of Education;
University of Ottawa financial aid bursaries (University budget bursaries, tuition fees exemption);
Financial aid bursaries from private companies and various organizations (OSOTF, AUCC, other companies, the Queen Elizabeth II Aiming for the Top Scholarship, scholarships offered for studying in French in Ontario, scholarships from the Government of Québec, other scholarships offered by the Ministry of Education)

There are currently no programs being offered to guide parents of low-income students through the higher education experience.

The Universities universal bus pass is another example of programs aimed at reducing student debts. Over half of the students use public transit as their primary form of transportation. The U-pass reduces transit cost by 75% for students currently uses the bus and by a factor of 10 for students using a vehicle. The program also allows students to move to housing further away from the campus but that is much more affordable.
