Yes

A copy of the institution's definition of sustainability research:

The Office of Sustainability had adopted the following definition of sustainability research, adopted from the STARS Technical Manual:

Sustainability research focuses on at least one element of sustainability such as social equity or environmental stewardship; addresses a sustainability challenge (such as climate change, sustainable fuels, energy, and zero net energy buildings); or furthers our understanding of the interconnectedness of societal and environmental challenges.

Has the institution identified its sustainability research activities and initiatives?:
Yes

A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the inventory:

Two Office of Research resources were used to develop an initial list of sustainability research conducted at UT Knoxville as of December 31, 2010:

1) Tennessee Research and Creative Exchange digital repository (Trace) Archive, which include theses and dissertations accepted by the Graduate School.
2) Coeus System - searched for abstracts that contained the keywords "sustainability", "sustainable", "environment", "climate change", "climate", "ecological", or "green."

Once developed, the preliminary list of sustainability research was published on the Faculty Senate listserv, DDDH listserv and UT Make Orange Green website. Faculty members were encouraged to comment on and make suggestions for the list. The feedback that faculty provided was incorporated into the final version of the list.

Does the institution make its sustainability research inventory publicly available online?:
Yes
