VOLstarter

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:

VOLstarter is a crowdfunding website that allows alumni and friends to donate to specific projects and innovative programs that are created by students, faculty, and staff at the University of Tennessee. Donors can go online, search for projects that are most impactful to them, and then fund them. All of the donations go specifically to that project and many of them have sustainability components.
One example of a sustainability project funded through VOLstarter is UT's Appalchia Community Health and Readiness Project. The money earned from VOLstarter was used to build a water kiosk that addresses the urgent community need of clean water as well as purchasing containers that safely transported and stored water obtained from the kiosks. The kiosk was a success by increasing capacity, creating infrastructure and promoting healthy living in Clay County. This proposal was put on the VOLstarter website by students and faculty from the College of Nursing, the College of Architecture and Design, the College of Engineering and the Law Enforcement Innovation Center.
