A brief description of the healthcare facility’s sustainability initiatives:

UTRGV is affiliated with Tenet - Valley Baptist Medical Center - Harlingen, and Tenet - Valley Baptist Medical Center - Brownsville, members of Healthier Hospitals Initiative with a commitment to smarter purchasing, as well as HCA - Rio Grande Regional Hospital, member of Healthier Hospitals Initiative with a commitment to Less Waste. As a member of the UT System, UTRGV collaborates with UT Medical Branch Galveston, which is a member of Healthier Hospitals Initiative with commitments to Engaged Leadership and Healthier Food.
UTRGV is also affiliated with Doctors Hospital at Renaissance, with a newly opened Doctors Hospital at Renaissance-University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Family Medicine Center serving as a base for integrated programs of health care and education that are built around a team-approach to cover a spectrum of health services, including prevention and treatment. At the DHR–UTRGV Family Medicine Center, physicians provide a comprehensive range of medical services in a coordinated environment, ensuring optimal health for the patient—before, during, and between appointments.
In collaboration with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, the Family Medicine Center will serve as a physician training center for family medicine medical residents. The Family Medicine residency program focuses on comprehensive, family-oriented care including services for the Valley’s underserved population. Physicians are trained by other health care professionals to provide team-based, collaborative, integrated education and healthcare to meet the goals of the expanding healthcare system. Among the specialties offered at the clinic are family medicine, pediatrics, geriatrics, and obstetrics. Working with health care professionals in specialty areas such as sports medicine and behavioral health, The DHR-UTRGV Family Medicine Center looks to expand local treatment programs and increase access to medical care. The Family Medicine Center will allow Doctors Hospital at Renaissance to help strengthen the region’s primary care workforce and ensure that all members of the community have access to primary medical services.

Additionally, Knapp Medical Center and The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley collaborate at the Knapp Medical Center/UTRGV Family Practice Residency Clinic.
The residency program, the first of its kind in the Mid-Valley, will be located in the 13,800-square-foot building on the western edge of Mercedes, on the northwest corner of Expressway 83 and North Mile 2 West Road (at 2810 W. Expressway 83). The City of Mercedes donated the land to Knapp for the clinic.
In addition to serving rotations at Knapp Medical Center, the residents also will see patients at the new clinic, expected to open in late August, under the direction of Dr. Miguel Tello, associate program director of the Knapp Medical Center/UTRGV Family Practice Residency Program.
UTRGV President Guy Bailey said the new residency program and clinic fulfill several of the university’s core missions, such as building partnerships with area hospitals and expanding healthcare throughout the Valley.
