A brief description of the institution’s green infrastructure and LID practices:

All development plans include rain water management that is intended to reduce runoff volume and improve water quality by replicating the natural hydrology and water balance of the site. Typical examples include water gardens, which also add to the aesthetics of the location, and rainwater harvesting which collects rainfall runoff from the roofs of some select buildings and directs into the underground.

UTRGV also implements pollution prevention practices to capture or prevent pollution in storm water runoff using drainage swales, or vegetative lined filter strips along parking lot drainage ditches.

In addition to instruction and research, activities conducted at UTRGV in support of these efforts
include vehicle maintenance, vehicle washing, and chemical and material storage.

As per UT System policy UTS169 Sustainability Practices, Sec. 6 Energy and Water Efficiency Practices:

6.1 Each institution will update Energy and Water Management Plans to reflect energy consumption reduction goals as of FY 2011 over the baseline levels established by the Energy Utility Task Force in 2001. The institutions will report annual progress to their Energy and Water Management Plans by means of the State Energy Conservation Office (SECO) template.

UTRGV implements a Storm-water Management Program (SWMP)-A comprehensive program to manage the quality of discharges from the municipal separate storm sewer system. The SWMP outlines activities associated with the UTRGV environment and the potential pollutants that can be released to the stormwater if not managed in the appropriate manner. The Stormwater control methods will be implemented in an effort to eliminate the risk of the release of these contaminants to the stormwater, or in the event of an accidental release minimize any potential impact.
