ER-9: Sustainability Learning Outcomes

Each of the degree programs within the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability, and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) have embedded sustainability in the learning outcomes expected for all students. A description of these learning outcomes can be found the CAUSES website at www.udc.edu/causes.

Information on the BS in Environmental Sciences with the Urban Sustainability Option:

The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences with an Urban Sustainability Option introduces students to the concept of sustainability in the context of real-world problems in an urban setting, exploring the interaction of environmental, economic and social systems. Sustainability is the ability of mankind to live harmoniously with our natural environment today, without depleting the planet of resources for future generations. Students will be able to adapt to and be capable of both communicating and learning across a number of disciplines, as well as have a strong orientation towards problem solving, analytical acumen and quantitative methods. The Urban Sustainability program will expose students to the diverse academic disciplines – social sciences, environmental sciences, economics and business, and the natural sciences – that are critical to creating solutions for these challenging times. Urban Sustainability will combine knowledge, skills and values of diverse disciplines with practical hands-on experiences outside the classroom within the Washington, DC and surrounding metropolitan region.

Graduates will be prepared to enter into strong graduate and professional schools to study a broad range of subjects including urban planning, landscape design, environmental sciences, business administration, marketing, public policy, and procurement.

Graduates will also be prepared to gain employment in government, green business, non-profit organizations, utilities and regulatory agencies.

UDC awarded 486 bachelor's and master's degrees in academic year 2009-2010, 15 of which were awarded by programs that are now part of the newly formed College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability, and Environmental Sciences.
